Happiness and moonshine has been sitting here quietly and consistently being source of both memory and consternation for me. I love this place I created. It was a source of amazing growth for me and it so served a huge purpose in what I am creating today. I want to write here, but then I want to write there...then here...then there.....the there has won out lately and it still is possibly where most of my writing will sit....but then there is here...this place where I get to really just show up at a moments notice and write about pretty much nothing and it feels good. It feels really good to me to write in this story telling way. I actually also write in a personal journal that I use as my morning pages....and even that doesn't create the same sensation as this place. So...how about this; Why don't I say that I will use this space, for now, as my go to 'fix' for when I want to make 'much ado about nothing'. That feels good. Thanks for waiting.

Thank you for being here gracefully waiting and being a source of both growth and memory for me. For now...I write here when the mood hits.

Why I haven't Written by Laura English

I am sad for April's passing. It was a blur. April held a visit from my parents, normal 'life stuff', calls with friends and clients, photography appointment, a visit to my mom's, and an 11 year old birthday sleepover . All of the normal ingredients of a life being lived. My disappointment is that I feel I wasn't as 'present' as normal. I know I have more 'normal' life to live...I intend to notice more...until I don't...and that is OK.

For now, it is a central piece of furniture in our house

Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy! Today was a gloriously sunny day. I stood in my front yard with pastie white limbs exposed to soak in the Vitamin D. I am sure I was a sight and perhaps the neighbors were a little leery...but I LOVED IT. It is amazing what one day of nice weather can do for the countless days of 'water boarding' we just experienced. I am putting my order in for more!!!!

I just got off the phone with one of my new friends I've brought into my life. We went on and on and before I knew it, we'd been on the phone for 3 hours. It was as if time had stood still, but it didn't. I love those kind of connections ...however, they're not conducive for getting 'other stuff' done. I guess all things need to come in moderation (or not).

Today I dealt with the nitty gritty of my business. It felt very much like a challenging puzzle and sometimes I felt really uncomfortable. But, in the end, I feel proud for sticking with it and now I know what to do differently. So weirdly, as much as it was uncomfortable it was also extremely rewarding....and I have a lot more to learn...and I probably could have done it better... but hey! I'm human.

Wowee cazowee it has been awhile since I've been over here OR over there. I have 'excuses' but really, if I wanted to be here and there I would have made time...so excuses fall flat. I am kind of 'just getting by' with all of my activities so the extra stuff have fallen by the wayside. Somehow I'm either avoiding or not able...not sure which is true-r. So...really, I'm just stopping in to say hi. I'm still kicking. Stuff is 'rumbling' in me and I'm making moves on some fun activities in my life. I've finished some books, I played the lottery and created a fun story of my winnings (key word "story"), I've walked in the snow a bunch, I've slept a lot better, I am bringing meditation into my life, I am in a class with some great women, I connect regularly with the people I love....that is where I am...my actions are not stalled, but I do believe my thinking has been...I'm working through that now!

Eating healthier AND eating candy...as I pop a mini Heath Bar into my mouth

I'm thinking that this is what it feels like to feel authentically living your life. When there is a buzz, I wonder if it is a more surface-level approach.

The feeling I have feels as if it is deep inside....as if it is becoming part of my DNA.

I like this feeling.

I will notice it more.

Nine

The first word in my head is nine...wah?

Hmm...am I actually saying NO in German?
Is there something I need to remember at 9am or 9pm?
In nine days will there be something magical happening for me - interesting, if you count today guess who's birthday it is?
In numerology the nine is described as: the teacher; tolerant; somewhat impractical and sympathetic. My daughter is a 9. I am a 7.
My son is 9 years old.
I was married on 9/9/95.
Counting up to Graduate School, I lived 9 places: Patuxent River, MD; Monterey, CA; Fremont, CA; Newport, RI; Lexington Park, MD; Keflavik, Iceland; Naples, Italy; Fredericksburg, VA; Oshkosh, WI.
It took a little over 9 months to incubate both my kids (in my belly).
In the '80s there was a song about 99 Red Balloons (now you're going to have the stuck in your head all day)

That is about it for 9s. Now I am very curious what my next post will be about. My crystal ball is murky right now...so we'll just have to wait and see.

Freedom

I decided to write the first word that came to my mind as the subject of this post. So freedom it is. Hmmm freedom from what? freedom to do what?

Recently this song lyrics came to my mind "I'm free to do what I want any ol' time". I know that it is a Rolling Stones song, but my version I hear is the Soupdragons one. This "theme song" represents the idea that I have choice in EVERYTHING I do. Sometimes I get fooled into thinking otherwise and then I get the feeling of being trapped. Just the slight change of perspective helps me to feel more empowered.

So, now from this place of 'freedom to choose'...I choose to end this blogpost. For some reason, it feels heavy to keep it going. My next choice? Hmmm the voice in my head says "coffee".

Date night with my husband: We saw 127 Hours. That movie is not for the weak of heart...yowza. Both of use had to hide our faces (and ears too). Dear Happiness and Moonshine - I promise...I am still happy...I just somehow have misplaced you as a priority. I'm not sure why...and I'm kind of not interested in finding out. But, I'm back again tonight...to check in and say I appreciate what you've done for me these past years and I look forward to more chats. I seem to have found many other ways to busy my mind and my heart and they're all good...coaching clients, photography clients, wonderful kids that I can't stop gushing over, a husband who supports all of my silly adventures...and a myriad more exciting features of my life. Oh yeah, and then I have "that new blog"...that is where I think the 'glitch' is...I feel like I'm two timing, I get confused who I need to say what to, I run out of ideas...just a little but of a stopgap if you must know. Having two blogs is proving to be a little cumbersome. They seem to be encroaching on each other. Every time I start one here, I end up cutting it and moving it to my other one. I sense a transition to one blog is coming (my other one). I am at 800 entries so perhaps upon the 3rd anniversary of this blog (and goal of 1,000), I will call it good...Maybe/Maybe not?

I'll have to talk about threes next (as I see my reference to 3rd anniversary) because I've been brewing a little theory on that number...hmmm....something to ponder. Until then...have a lovely rest of your daylightsavingstime day!

Hello Saturday...what happened to Tuesday through Friday?

I cannot seem to find the answer to how the week is now over.

Having said that, I am also glad the weekend is here.

There are three adorable third grade boys asleep in our basement.

They had a 10pin bowling, arcade playing, pizza eating, cake noshing, imagination accessing kind of night...what I would term "a blast".

My daughter was whisked away by her friends (our neighbors) for a last minute sleepover.

Last night's cacophony of fun was the finale of a ca-razy busy week.

This weekend will be more mellow and next week I will build in down time.

I feel I am ready to slow the tempo down to perhaps a pace between Moderato and Adagio which, according to Answers.com, is Andante - walking pace.

Sounds bellisima to me!

I am so glad my son chose ME to be his mom

I just plain forgot to post yesterday. No real good excuses except that I spent the morning getting hugs and kisses from this cutie pie while I documented her 12 month self. I love taking photos. Today feels like a clean slate kind of day. That is what I wrote on my twitter account today (@laurahenglish is my twitter alias). Anyway, that is what I feel. I decided to start a new book Infinite Possibilities by Mike Dooley. I also am going to finish my journal book and start a new one that has a fun kaleidoscope of colors. In fact, I may just quickly end my other book without ACTUALLY filling every page. Just that act of NOT finishing is somewhat scary for me (in more of a psychological way...not real fear silly). So it may take courage but alas...maybe that is all I need to feel big and strong and in control....TA DA! Obviously I'm a little goofy today, but this clean slate thing is kind of a cool feeling...it feels like what you'd feel when looking at a big open vista with never ending views of nature. So now what? I don't know. I'm going to go with my gut (or one might call it intuition) on my next steps. That is pretty much how I run my life anyway, but the Tabula Rasa approach feels kind of groovy....DUDE!

I have a client coming to my house. I spent the morning tidying...I just felt the tell tale "click" feeling in my body where I know that I am feeling "good enough" about my house. I like the "click"...it helps me to let go of the perfectionist..."must have it perfect" feeling and lets me get on with my life. I don't know when this "click" perspective came into being but it has been in the past few years! I am learning to be neat, I am learning to employ wabi sabi techniques, I am learning to love my processes so that they don't overwhelm me! Feels really good...now to prepare my brain and heart for my client!

Phew - both kids have already been chosen to be "on display" in their classes. This little program is meant to highlight each kid throughout the year in his/her classroom. I already have a hard time developing a system to get the kids to do their homework efficiently...then add extra forms to fill out...then add "star student" and I'm a mess. This morning my son and I had to scramble at the last minute to get 6-7 photos printed, write out his favorite things, find a special toy...AND make the bus on time. Needless to say, I had to drive him to school! The good news is...I don't have to do this again until next year! Holy Ca-Moly I'm exhausted from that morning dog and pony show!

My husband's flight from London had to be diverted due to a medical emergency on his flight.
He asked me to guess where they landed. I guessed right - Iceland...but I wasn't completely right because he not only landed in the country I lived in for 2 years of my teenage years (which still causes my right eye to twitch)...BUT he landed in Keflavik, Iceland which is EXACTLY where I lived. What a completely RANDOM coincidence...no one goes to Keflavik (especially since the Naval base has since closed). He corroberated my story that there is NOTHING there! I am NOT lying!

My kids and I are very well suited to have mini 'dadlessness' times. Because I don't normally cook, the meals are often of the frozen variety and so I'm usually making something I know they'll dig...then I add some veggies and fruits to make myself feel better. I allow them a little TV time if they've done their homework (which gives me, some "me" time). I let them both sleep in my bed...and I'll sleep on the couch or in one of their beds. It is all kind of a "different" flow of things...BUT (and it is a big one)...I would not want to sustain that 'flowiness' forever. We like our foursome A LOT. We love having daddy home. In fact just this evening I heard my daughter singing the night time song my husband sings pretty much every night (and I have to say...it isn't a song you want to stay in your head). It is actually the Mickey Mouse Club theme song (with some creative license). So...our little threesome is moving toward wanting to be a foursome again...and that is ALL GOOD! I appreciate my life immensely...just thought I should say that out loud!

Complete and Delete

This week I am busy being a single mom...which I'm good at in week=long doses. I actually enjoy it. I also enjoy when the time is over ...so Friday afternoon is glimmering in the distance.

My intention for the week is to complete and delete something every day. Yesterday I completed an outstanding group email I wanted to send to my colleagues and I deleted many emails from my inbox. Today my complete was editing and printing photos for a soccer team...my delete is actually the word WEDNESDAY from the newsletter I helped produce (and replacing it with the word THURSDAY). I'm not sure that counts as a feel good thing but it is something I am compelled to do because I made the error (aaargh). Tomorrow...well, tomorrow is another day...who knows what I'll complete and delete...but either way it will FEEL GOOD!

b) you probably could have tried more to get to bed

c) it is hard to work in the pitch black

f) the quality of the work done may be suspect!

Random thoughts because I don't have much focus power right now:

Kids are about to be home and I don't feel 'ready' for their energy
I did sleep in my bed last night but took about 2 hours to fall asleep. I'm proud I stuck it out.
I am excited that all the shows are starting back again.
I have a sugar addiction...right now there are sour gummy worms on my desk
I am so grateful that my co-VP is 'on it' with our school newsletter. This first one it a total "winging it job"...now to figure out how to get someone ELSE to do it.
In a matter of a month, I've gotten very knowledgeable about our school...maybe too knowledgeable.
I get to go out with my Martha Beck peers tomorrow night. I need a fix.
The book I'm reading now is called Practical Intuition by Laura Day. I'm learning to listen more to my 'hunches'...it's fun.
I have a friend who is dealing with a sister with a severe illness and complicating factors. I'm learning how to support without attachment. I don't know that I am good at it.
My waste bin in my office needs to be emptied...(maybe that one belongs on my to do list).

Cooking in Croc Pots makes me hungry earlier than I should be.

The radio in my car is broken and I'm not interested in the money it might take to fix it.
I like being "efficient" - that was my intention for today, and I've done pretty well so far.
I cannot believe that on Thursday I'll have been married 15 years...ca-razy.
My daughter LOVES the mall and I'm scared...I've avoided it for 10 years...but she now knows their 'potential'.
I love coincidences...they make me giddy. Sunday I thought of a photography client in the morning and then I saw her at the mall that evening, AND she had JUST given photos to her mom from our session.
Random is fun!

I love that I have free time now and don't actually know what to do with it
I love that I decided to buy the Costco size tin of Jelly Bellies and hope that it lasts more than a day.
I love that I bought a smelly candle for my office to add a sensory element to my space.
I love that I slept in my bed last night (versus falling asleep on the couch).
I love that my daughter asked me to be with her all morning before school.
I love that both kids allowed me to walk them to their spots in line at school.
I love that I was confident to talk in front of the school parents even though I have a HUGE scab on my upper lip.

We are a day away from September 1.

That day represents new starts.

My daughter starts 5th grade and my son 3rd.
I start my life back as a mom with kids in school.
I start waking up and being goal-oriented from the get go (goal=get kids on bus).
I re-invigorate my intentions as a business woman, service provider, and person who continues to find deeper meaning and fulfillment in her life.
My kids start soccer games.
My husband starts travelling a little.
I start a more intense work-out with my friend.
Piano lessons commence
Homework begins
Regular bedtimes are here again.

Lots of good things coming my way....AND the biggest "start" in this blog-space is....I will start writing this blog as mainly LISTS of good things in my life "A rampage of gratitude" I like to call it. My other site http://www.lauraenglish.wordpress.com/ will be my main writing place. This is my way of rationalizing my never ending saga of "The Conflict of the Two Blogs".

I'm so excited for this change....I hope you join in on my rampages or at least get a boost in your own appreciation for what is going well in your life. Wouldn't that be cool?

Tipping Point

My house is a mess.

It wasn't a mess a week ago.

It was picked up a few days ago.

It is a big mess now.

I feel that messes go from being tiny

to out of control

with no in between 'general mess'.

I get overwhelmed

I feel it is helpless

Then, I am inspired to clean

I get it under control

I go a spell where it is neat mostly.

And then...it all starts again.

I have a friend who NEVER has a messy house

How does she do it?

I know she thinks it is logical how to do it.

I cannot see the logic.

I didn't get that gene.

And so it goes....and so it goes....

Fungus

I have some serious "facial fungus". I will, every so often, get a cold sore and some other facial anomaly. I am now in the "so often" phase. My face is super "pretty" right now. This is incredibly good timing (NOT) as I am starting to engage with other school parents and the such.

This "facial fungus" has been a part of my life since probably 3 years old. The great thing about this problem is that I've become very comfortable with myself and I've been known to say (in my head)..."if you don't like me because I have this gross thing on my face, then you are not meant to be my friend". Ultimately, I have lived the concept of "comfortable in my own skin (including fungi-fied skin). So...now that you're probably feeling sick right now...I will continue to go about my daily activities, with my little guests on my face, and one day in the near future, this will all be distant memory. AND, if we do meet on the street, please look only in my eyes (unless it spreads, then maybe my fabulous shoes). For those of you who have continued reading passed the words facial fungus, thanks for listening.

Eeking out

The kids and I are eeking out our last days of fun before school starts. We are lucky to have friends who like to plan fun stuff and then they invite us along. Yesterday was a day that could have ended in ho-hum but actually proved to be quite the opposite.

We made a big trek to a water playground that had potential for a watery fun day...but the playground was really meant for little kids. No big complaints were made from the young folk, but we mom's felt bored by it. After a few phone calls we had a new and way better plan...we had access to a house on the water with water toys, kayaks and a place for the moms to relax too. These were way better accommodations. Thank goodness for friends with access to houses on the water. For me it was a reminder that we always have choices and if we get creative, our days can be unexpectedly fabulous. I'mjustsaying.

We have exactly one more hour of our vacation; that is if you call a 6 hour wait at the Taipei airport as still being on vacation. Time is such an interesting concept when you're on vacation. It feels a long time to be away. It speeds up and the vacation is over. The travel home is an eternity, and the time I have to wait to see my precious children seems like decades. But then I'm back again to the thought that the vacation was too short. Very interesting this concept called time.

10 things I remember enjoying in the past few days:

Having a suit hand tailored for my husband

The lights at night in Hoian, Vietnam

Eating interesting and yummy Vietnamese food

Spending a whole day doing NOTHING but reading by the water

Reading updates about my kids with their grandparents

Watching the crystal clear ocean water do its dance on the sand

Seeing all kinds of nature - butterflies, TINY frogs, shells, flowers...even cockroaches in a foreign land don't seem that bad

Realizing that my husband and I travel really well together

Thinking about our future travel plans

Finding treasures for our kids and getting excited to share them sooooooon.

Templed Out

Cambodia is cool (but Hot at the same time). I am reminded of Thailand and Malaysia more than in Vietnam. I am surprised by this but really really love this place. It has great people watching, amazing temples, lovely attitudes and just all around interesting perspective. The West has definitely infiltrated here. In the market area there is "pub street", there was a Mexican Restaurant and a Molly Malone's Irish Pub. They have different vibes than in their "native" habitat, but to find that type of place here is both comforting and disappointing. To add to the disappointment, I was lame last night and had a ham sandwich and Belgian Fries instead of the Khmer dish (local fare) that my husband enjoyed. I was needing a little comfort food as I'm not a huge fan of the Asian cuisine.

The main reason for our journey here are the amazing and abundant and huge temples. They delivered an awe inspiring experience. You cannot find that kind of scale and craftsmanship in this era. We covered some ground during our Temple hopping and I'm reminded of a trip to England with my family in the early '80s where my parents dragged us into EVERY SINGLE cathedral in the country. After awhile you get that if you've seen one you've seen them all. We stopped at 5 Temples and am taking the risk that we've missed a stunning view...I think I'll be ok.
